Fragmented or Whole? ( From the course Grief to Love, Trauma to Freedom )
When there has been profound abuse, profound fear or hard to bare sorrow, one’s experience of self
and reality, or self-in-reality can become fragmented or compartmentalized.
To become fragmented is not a flaw, it’s actually a sophisticated survival or coping mechanism,
that will allow us to be able to move forward and “function” in life.
Imagine that our inner cohesion is a round vase.
And that some events in our lives are so disturbing to our psyche and emotional body that this vase
is shattered in several pieces.
Remember the image of the vase with the crack in it from which “the light shines through”?
I’m not talking about a crack now, I’m talking about shattered pieces.
So imagine your inner cohesion in shattered pieces on the ground in front of you.
Perhaps right now a scene of your life jumps at you when you read those words…perhaps there are many scenes of your life available to fit this moment but for now just trust the very first image
that has appeared…Do you see one?
Now tune deeply into your body. Look for a physical sensation. The strongest most noticeable first…
Don’t try to give it a name. Just feel the sensation and notice where it is in your body.
Take a deep and slow breath…
And then go just a little deeper, underneath the physical sensation and feel for an emotion you can recognize…probably fear, panic, grief…Put both hands on the part of your body which is contracting…
Give it some breath, some love and reassurance…
Now back to our inner cohesion/ vase analogy, in pieces on the ground in front of you.
At the time you were perhaps too young to know where to find glue to fix your
shattered feeling of wholeness.
You have no idea how to put the pieces back together.
So you attempt to organize them...
You find a tray with sections, like those old wood printer trays with dividers for each letter,
and you order the bits.
OR, you find a small chest of drawer with little keys and you take the pieces that hurt the most, like Innocence and Beauty, and you put them in the most inaccessible drawer,
and lock it with a key of shame.
Overtime you forget where you put the key.
The organizing tray or small chest of drawer is our mind.
And because our minds can impact our bodies by creating contractions which in-turn create breath retention which lock these contractions in place, to find our way to healing requires that
we go through the body.
Our bodies are where the keys live.
